You need a sense of humour like a charity shop, bursting with good will, to laugh at Swimming with Men. It’s meant to be poignant too, this Britcom about a group of background-diverse Londoners who form a synchronised swimming troupe. The Full Monty, still cursing us with its success, has influenced a whole generation of arch, cumbrous “comedies” about men getting together doing un-men-like things.

Rob Brydon plays the repressed city accountant who joins the male Nereids splashing in municipal pools, coached by a token-woman trainer (Charlotte Riley), before they compete in a Milan world championship. Brydon, so funny with his dry wit and faux innocence on television, looks lost and unhappy. But he swims quite well.
